Be Consistent

Any individual who seeks to enhance his or her career must pay attention to personal branding at work. This is how you want other people to perceive you and your work. One of the key rules of personal branding at work is CONSISTENCY.   Consistency is a steadfast adherence to the same principles, thought, behaviour, course or form irrespective of external circumstances. It is to have a certain degree of assurance that you will always behave in a regular pattern or style. Consistency is the right approach to maintain balance at work. I've always strived to stay consistent to my ideas about how work should be done. It’s easier to be great than to be consistent because it can sometimes be tough but when we master it, success is at hand. Many times, the difference between failure and success is consistency. A lot of us have always had fluctuating high and low points in our career because we find it difficult to be consistent in our approach to excellent work. Even th...

Hiring the Magic Baby

Hiring is a journey that starts with sourcing and ends with selection. When you make one wrong selection decision, you would have succeeded in taking your organization ten steps backwards with possibilities of future bad taste and memories to savour. What happens when you finally get one right person out of 500 already considered? Another 'magic baby' would have been born for the organization ready to be christened "we are almost there"! Such babies are born to take your organization closer to the planned and ideal destination. Whether during seasons of economic depression or bouyancy, magic babies have always proven to be the key differentiators for enduring competition and sustainability. What are you doing daily to find your magic babies? Why would you need one? You will reach your zenith!

Unmask Yourself

Are you really comfortable to take one big risk of revealing parts of yourself that you would have loved to share with others but prefer to bury in the interest of job security?   Do you find it easier to fit in rather than stand out? How authentic are you? If you were to rate your originality on a scale of 1-10, where would you be? Many employees across different organizations really do wear masks because they don’t really think their company value their uniqueness and they are afraid that they’ll get biased treatment once they begin to show their creative true colours. Unfortunately, in many cases they are right but I don’t seem to think that this should become everyone’s reality. You cannot bury who you really are if you want to truly impress other people as a professional. Do not underestimate the power of being yourself. Choose to be original. The key to standing out, impressing and inspiring others at work and as a professional lies in your ability to bring your ...

Credibility, an Exchange for Lasting Synergy and Leverage

I was once a student of history and philosophy of science and there used to be two philosophical logics that caught my interest so well...they were Modus Ponens & Modus Tollens. Modus Ponens says "If P implies Q, given P therefore we can conclude Q. Modus Tollens says "If P implies Q; if not Q we can therefore conclude it's not P. This looks so familiar to the teachings of the holy book which says "One will chase a Thousand and Two will chase Ten Thousand". Yes that's where I am going! Synergy and Leverage! If 1= 1000 and 2 = 10,000; therefore anytime 2people do not come together, they already lost 9,000 which is  over 80% of what was possible. Two are better than one because they will always have a great reward for their labour. What you can't do alone, try to look for patnerships to get it done.Synergy has always been the creation of a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts. It is the cooperative interaction among groups or people that cr...

Fail Again, Fail Better

Something good always come out of failure. I currently work in a company where our sun-rising product is a result of a failed business bid. It was the past failures and disappointments during attempts to take another failed product to market that created the new Remita product that everyone now enjoys. Every wrong attempt discarded is an opportunity to move forward. Failure is the tuition we pay in order to succeed and those who are not ready to pay the fees definitely will not qualify to write the examination that is designed to take them to the next level of success. In order to succeed, your desire for success must be greater than your fear of failures. Last Sunday, I watched the Super Eagles muscle out the Elephants of Cote d’ivoire that is revered as the “golden generation of African football” in the ongoing African Cup of Nations Football tournament to the amazement of all the cynics. Many times, the fear of failure could even be the tonic we need to pursue our dreams vi...

Economic Hope?

2012 has been a turbulent year as it receded and surged on the waves of increasing insecurity, unemployment rates, infrastructure decay and heavy interest of government in taxes. However; 2013 will definitely be a big year for many. How can you position yourself for all the 'big' in the year? There is no sitting on the fence and hoping things will get better, you have got to start working at achieving your set targets. Don't just hope things will move your way; hope is not a reliable economic tool neither is it a strategy that always works! Take time to do a financial health check to determine where you have been, where you are currently and where you hope to be by end of 2013. You must give considerations to your particular requirements, timescales and different options you have. Brainstorm every possible method you can adopt to accomplish your stretch goals- those that are far out of reach that you are not sure you can achieve. In the first place, real economic goals must...

Spread Out! Think Big!

Welcome to 2013, a year full of promises.   It’s the first day of the year and may I ask “what can you see yourself achieving this year?”Write down your goals and pursue it vigorously. While doing this, be sure that your goals and plans are not mean ones. It’s likely to be very risky for you to think and plan small this year. What if your best plans have the capacity to come true? Prepare yourself to engage your gears for good speed. Charles Schulz said “Life is a ten-speed bike. Most of us have gears we never use”. Many new businesses are going to be born, new jobs are going to be created and many will move on to bigger and better jobs. For others, it will be a year to stabilize in career, study, health or ministry. Someone said “it is very dangerous to have small plans”. Big plans attract big people while small plans attract small people. Unfortunately small people always create big problems. I used to have a lawyer friend who stopped being a real estate agent for ...
