Searching for God

"We saw His Star and we have come to pay him homage" (Matthew 2:2).

These are the words of the three wise men to the inhabitants of Jerusalem upon their arrival in the Holy City. They inquired about "the new-born King of the Jews". These are the very words that we recite at the Feast of the Epiphany: the manifestation of Jesus as the Messiah, the Son of God, and the Saviour to the people who have lived in the darkness of paganism.

The wise men, representatives of the pagan people, remind us of our own search for God. they perceived His presence in the wonders of creation. To find the truth, which they had only glimpsed through nature and study, they under-took a journey full of unanswered questions and great risks.

Their search ended in a discovery and in an act of deep humble adoration before the infant Jesus and His mother. They offered Him their precious treasures and received in return the priceless gift of Christian faith and joy.

May the wise men be our guides so that our daily walk will always have as it aim Jesus Himself; the eternal Son of God and the son of Mary.
