No New Year Without a New You!

We have got a lot to be thankful for in the outgoing year. The year has been particularly busy for me but I thought it wise to return here today to share my reflections about the old year and my expectations as we move into the new year. There has been quite a number of unpleasant stories in the course of the year. Abduction of Chibok girls and many others are among the statistics that has pushed terrorism and insurgency to an unprecedented high level. We still have our many battles with corruption, incompetent leadership at all levels, high unemployment rates, youth restiveness and many more. I can't promise that the story will be different in the coming year but what I can guarantee is that your own story can be different. A new YOU can definitely bring out a whole new YEAR for you. Irrespective of what is happening around you, there is hope for you. At least, our elders say that 'your morning starts when you wake up'. Here are few of my advice for you in the new year...

Be Real

Our elders usually say that two people can’t miss out on a lie; if the person being told a lie does not know, the person telling the lie does know. Realism matters when the choice is between you and your career progress. Unfortunately, it’s so appalling to see how many people don’t want to confront issues realistically.   To perform at your best, you need to consistently take a realistic view of yourself and compare it with other colleagues and contemporaries within and outside your company or industry. Sometimes you even need to measure your own progress in the light of where you were last year and now vis-à-vis the parameters you have set for yourself previously. Before you complain about being stagnated on a job grade for so long, you need to take a sincere inventory of how you have fared compared to others and what you should be doing. Ask yourself what you are doing right or wrong and be determined to fix the ‘wrongs’ and improve on the ‘rights’. This is the sure way to ...

Know Yourself

Are you real or fake? Is your outer person the same as your inner person? Is who you are the same as what you do or say? To grow your career to enviable heights, you must be authentic and this starts with knowing yourself because sooner or later people always spot the fakers. As you grow your career, you will always have to deal with people. Self-discovery and mastery is the foundation of people skills and your success story in this respect starts with convincing yourself that you don’t have all the answers. It’s important that you are honest with yourself. You need to be able to make a candid evaluation of yourself and your realities. Knowing this, you need to keep an open mind and be ready to tolerate from others, the diversity of their viewpoints and mental architectures about you and the way you work, whether it’s what you like to hear or not. Of course, this requires that you keep your ego in check and be more realistic about your problems. Then, you are able to get the coura...

Evolve and Excel 2013: CIPM’s 45th Annual Conference- What will happen?

There are many challenges and opportunities on the horizon, and the organizers of this year’s conference are looking at how to incorporate those to make the CIPM event a better, more user-friendly one. It was created to be a valuable resource for HR pros and business leaders, and that mission is about being fulfilled! I may not be fully clear about what will happen at the annual conference this year but borrowing a leaf from what came out of the event last year, the sessions are really going to be amazing and filled with all kinds of new experiences for the attendees! A new session has been included and it’s the HR Clinic! HR Subject Matter Experts will be addressing myriads of issues and practical, real life challenges confronting HR practitioners. The session will be moderated and chaired by the President of the Institute, Mr. Victor Famuyibo, FCIPM and the discussants are: ·       Mr. Collins Taiwo Edebiri, FCIPM, CEO Vital Solutions Inc. ·  ...

Let’s Do Away With HR

Can we begin to boldly pursue realities? Let’s do away with HR.   Don’t you think managers should be doing “HR’s job”? I think in amazing number of cases it’s not really HR’s job. Want your HR team to be useful and provide genuine value to the organization? Let HR focus on strategic activity, supporting the critical business functions, and planning for the future. Why? Because when you spend all day fighting fires, responding to emergencies (real or imagined), and generally acting as a support for managers who won’t manage, there’s no time for the activities that will truly demonstrate the value of HR. Should HR completely get out of the practice of being a facilitator for employees and managers?   Let’s discuss. A large portion of the support that managers request from HR is actually work that could (and arguably should) be accomplished by the manager. Disagree? Unhnnn…the choice is yours, but I’d like to explore getting rid of HR as it’s all-too-co...
