No New Year Without a New You!

We have got a lot to be thankful for in the outgoing year. The year has been particularly busy for me but I thought it wise to return here today to share my reflections about the old year and my expectations as we move into the new year.

There has been quite a number of unpleasant stories in the course of the year. Abduction of Chibok girls and many others are among the statistics that has pushed terrorism and insurgency to an unprecedented high level. We still have our many battles with corruption, incompetent leadership at all levels, high unemployment rates, youth restiveness and many more.

I can't promise that the story will be different in the coming year but what I can guarantee is that your own story can be different. A new YOU can definitely bring out a whole new YEAR for you. Irrespective of what is happening around you, there is hope for you. At least, our elders say that 'your morning starts when you wake up'. Here are few of my advice for you in the new year:

1.  Don't expect too much from the Government. Where there is no expectation, there will be no disappointments.

2. Complaints is not an option. You must take responsibility for your life in the new year. You can't afford to blame anyone for anything that is happening or will happen to you. Choose to think right because your life will definitely move in the direction of your dominant thoughts.

3. Examine yourself. Evaluate your goals, achievements, success and failures. Note the lessons.Where am I now? What could I have done differently? What are the lessons learnt? What's the way forward? Review what you did in 2014- right or wrong and choose to make it right going into the new year.

4. Set new goals. A goal is supposed to be the object of a person's ambition or effort; an aim or desired result. You must set a personal development goal for every area of the role that life has given you to play. Whether it is the role of a mother, father, employee, entrepreneur, politician, student  or pastor. You have a personal responsibility to educate yourself to know better than you knew in 2014. Unless you develop the capacity to solve life's problems at a higher level, it will be unfair to expect a higher life. Set a goal to develop yourself in any area where you want to see real change.

5. Dream Big. Let your imagination go to work. See yourself in charge. Any image that life finds in your mind is what it prints out for you in real life. If you don't like the picture you see, change the image. Plan not to adjust your imagination to your current circumstances because in the realm of imagination, just anything is possible.

6. Trust God. We all need the help of God to succeed and do well in life. If becoming a high flier in life is only by hard work, then everyone should be in the air by now. There is always a God-factor in every true success story. It's so easy to succeed when God is involved and He is helping you.So, after working so hard, trust God to bless your hard work.

7. Be grateful. Grateful people are great people. For everything that will happen. For everyone you will meet. For every success or failure. BE GRATEFUL!

I wish you a prosperous 2015!

  1. An inspiring piece that is. Thanks tiMItOPE for sharing your thoughts, both on the outgoing and incoming years. Truly, the year has been fraught with unprecedented challenges, such as we've never seen anything like it in our national history. Although, this may be different for individuals, the fact remains that we all faced challenges of varying magnitudes. I remember that Obama said in his inaugural speech, for his first spell in office that, "...our challenges are old, but the strategies to overcome them are entirely new". Exactly what we need, new tools to tackle old problems. And, according to your piece, the first tool that must be changed is 'YOU'. Only then can one have a new year. I've gleaned wisdom from your well written article, and it has gone a mile corroborating my belief that rather than making New Year Resolutions only, I must painstakingly make corresponding Revolutions.
Thanks again. Have a blissful new year.
