Give Your Core Values a Big Leap
·
Do you remember all your organization’s
core values by heart?
·
When was the last time your company’s
core values came to mind as you were working on a task?
·
Are you aware of the foundational underpinnings of your
organization’s culture?
·
Do you have a strong grasp of your organization’s
corporate goals and objectives?
In the next two
weeks, we’ll attempt to briefly explore some ideas on defining, sharing and
affirming core values for maximum success. I’ll be looking at the importance of
core values to employee engagement and how those values relate to both
engagement and business success.
Core values reflect what is central to any business success.
They are designed
to be your guiding principles: who you are, what you believe, and who you want
to be going forward. In effect, your culture in bullet
point forms. They represent your company’s highest priorities, deeply held
beliefs, and core, fundamental driving forces. They define what you believe and
how you want to interact with employees and with the world beyond your doors. Sometimes those values come from
the organizational legacy of a founder. Sometimes they grow from the company’s
strategic vision but whichever way it evolved, when thoughtfully chosen, it
reflects all that is best in our organization and establish a vision of who you
want to be.
How Do I see Core Values?
·
A compelling story about your organization’s long-term
future
·
A definition of how you plan to create that future
·
A set of actions and behaviours that will guide you
to that future.
Can you please take time to think through the three elements
listed above? Whatever makes sense to you are values!
Once You Are Clear About Your Values
Because
values guide behaviour, they are foundational to your culture—and should
represent the best and strongest things your culture has to offer. So, once you
strike the right chord to give your values a big tune leap, you must:
- Commit to them – make them stand the test of time.
- Communicate them – Make sure everyone knows and truly understands what your values mean.
- Protect them – Stick to them even when it is challenging and encourage people to cherish and be passionate about them.
- Live them – Engage with them daily. People remember 80% of what they see and do daily.
You will reach your
zenith!
