Be a Leader

Managers and Leaders are totally different in character and business contribution. Managers have subordinates, leaders have followers. Managers dictate to others what needs to be done, leaders influence others to get things done by also doing. You can’t lead if you are not part of the team; right in the front and doing what you want others to do. If you say “don’t deliver late on assignments”, you should also be seen to be doing same.

A manager solves ‘closed problem’: how do we get to ‘Z’ from ‘A’ as efficiently as possible? So, he knows just one view point; how to get to ‘Z’ and act. A leader will define point ‘Z’ and connect as well as convince others to see ‘Z’ the same way he does. That’s an ‘open problem’. Leaders share perspectives from multiple windows.

Some are born leaders but most leaders are made. So you can make yourself one. Now that you are on the track to becoming an ‘expert’, there is a necessary transition that must occur for your ‘expertise’ to translate into ‘industry leadership’. It is critical for a leader to recognize that they are the leader (whether they are the Driver or the Managing Director) and that with such role comes responsibility. You may have colleagues that also possess characteristics for leadership and it’s your duty to help foster that growth. It takes a great leader- coach to nurture a star into a leader and then steps aside to allow them drive the team to success.

Today’s real leaders acknowledge that some employees needed to be treated better than customers to maximize shareholder value even though the customer is king. Leaders have to show their people that they truly do care about them and their well being and ability to do the job. Hope is not a strategy and simply hoping a manager becomes a leader on their own often lead to frustration for that manager and loss of staff as a result. Please, do not take a higher responsibility by way of promotion and more benefits until you are sure that you have developed your leadership competency for such role- this is a key prerequisite for your success at higher levels.

Choose to be a leader today!

You will reach your zenith!
